Why I chose a village setting for Descendants Of The Curse

Image
I've always loved small picturesque villages. Life seems so much more relaxed than the hustle and bustle of where I live and it's somewhere that I'd like to move to one day but my kids disagree. They think that it would be boring and leave them feeling isolated, much like the characters in the book having to make their own entertainment which goes horribly wrong. When I think of villages, I can't help but recall episodes of Midsomer murders, or films like Hot Fuzz. In fact village life is depicted as quite entertaining on both television and the big screen and this was my inspiration for the book. Small villages are the prime candidate for skeletons in the closet and age old secrets.

When reputation comes into play

Image
In this book it touches a lot on reputation both past and present. The curse was set because of a twisted tale of prejudice against the travellers that had happened upon the village. Their reputation was used to full advantage and twisted until a web of lies was spun and centuries down the line, prejudice against the one person who can help them could produce dire circumstances if they don't put their issues aside and see the bigger picture. A persons reputation is based on many things and not necessarily down to their own doing. It could be the area they live in, the colour of their skin or even their choice in clothing. In this world we judge people on their appearance and in some cases, condemn them without even taking the time to get to know them. In the book there are various scenarios that show this, including the ever famous mean girls in the lunch hall. We've all judged, or been judged, or even witnessed it at some point in our lives and though this is a work of fic

Here is another excerpt from the book for you. “So I thought we’d start with the traditional what are your deepest fears. Then move on to the summoning” Issac says holding the candle next to his grinning face which casts eerie shadows across his features. “Let’s start with the new girl. Its only polite to honour our guest” Selene says. Imogen hugs herself tighter and nods in acceptance of the challenge. “When I was little my father accidently locked me in the hallway cupboard. I was looking for my wellington boots to play out in the garden. He didn’t notice me and shut the door as he walked past. There was no handle on the inside for me to open the door and I was trapped in there for hours in complete darkness. Things kept brushing against me every time I moved I thought it was a thousand spiders crawling all over me. I screamed until my voice was hoarse but nobody heard me. Since that day I can’t stand to be in confined spaces and I’m not a huge fan of the dark either” Imo

My favourite character

Image
My favourite character has to be Naomi. She's strong, determined, sarcastic and smart. Before everything goes to hell, Naomi was selfish and determined to get out of the village at any cost, including hurting the ones she loves but that soon changed and she became the one to drive the rest on in their bid for survival. Naomi is someone to admire and though she doesn't display her affection, it's obvious in the things she does. Her sarcasm had me chuckling as I was writing and her endless energy is something I envy. We're all determined to succeed at some point but Naomi goes the extra mile, even when faced with her biggest fear and you can't help but admire her.
